At the age of 2.5 years, Mitchell and Jessika Kelly’s daughter Georgia was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. Rett Syndrome is a serious, lifelong, neurological disorder caused by random mutations in the gene MECP2 affecting the development of the central nervous system.
Rett affects one in 9000 live births in Australia and almost exclusively females with symptoms not usually occurring until six to eighteen months of age where the child goes through a ‘Rapid Destructive’ stage leading to lifelong impairment. Speech is lost, seizures can develop, irregular breathing patterns begin to occur and more than half the girls lose the ability to walk.
Near constant repetitive hand movements while awake replace purposeful hand use and self-feeding or picking something up become more difficult or impossible. Rett Syndrome symptoms are described as Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Autism and Epilepsy all in one little girl. It affects every part of daily life and our girls require 100% supervision and support for all care and daily needs.
Mitchell and Jessika Kelly together with Richard and Sophie Lilburne hosted the RISE against RETT Gala to coincide with the delivery of their new Rett Syndrome Kenworth T909 truck and Vawdrey trailers on Saturday March 26th, 2022. Through the generosity of the transport community, $230,000 was raised with all proceeds going to the Rett Syndrome Association of Australia.
